The governor summoned elected leaders to a press conference Wednesday afternoon in Madison, to jointly announce a plan under which taxpayers would put $250 million toward a new $500 million venue for the NBA team. The former and current owners of the Milwaukee Bucks have put $250 million on the table.

Within the next couple weeks, there could be a suggested financing plan for a new arena in downtown Milwaukee.

Gov. Walker says he’s optimistic a deal is near. Members of his staff have been meeting frequently with elected leaders and representatives of the Milwaukee Bucks. Talks are expected to continue this week.

The sticking point, according to Walker, is coming up with the right combination of public money for a new basketball arena.

It’s been a long time since the Milwaukee Bucks were the hottest ticket in town. A big crowd is expected tonight at the BMO Harris Bradley Center for the team’s biggest game of the year: Game 6 of their first round series.

The Bucks could have claimed victory just for making it to the 2015 NBA Playoffs. But in the first round against Chicago, they have two very real victories they can point to. Though, they still trail the Bulls, 3-to-2, in the best-of-seven series.

As the Milwaukee Bucks prepare to host the Chicago Bulls in Game 6 of the first round of the NBA Playoffs; supporters of a new arena are hoping to employ a full-court press to get a funding deal accomplished. They say a plan would ensure pro basketball has a future in Milwaukee.

Recent polls show support for an arena among Milwaukee area residents, but much weaker support in other parts of the state.

Milwaukee is buzzing about the proposed new arena for downtown. The Bucks, on Wednesday, finally unveiled their blueprint.

It calls for the creation of an arena and entertainment district. The cost: one-billion dollars. Some business owners seem excited.

If you sort through the details of the plan, you find an arena that seats 17,000 people, a public plaza that would serve as an entertainment venue and a state-of-the-art practice facility.

The new plan would replace the one Gov. Walker put forward. He recommended the state borrow $220 million.  Mayor Barrett opposes the lower amount.

Under Walker's proposal, Wisconsin would repay the borrowed money using the income taxes the NBA players pay to the state. Yet, from the beginning, some Republican lawmakers made it clear that they think Walker’s plan is too expensive.

The new plan on the table calls for the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands to lend the state $150 million to put toward a new downtown arena. The board is Wisconsin’s oldest agency.

One of the elements of Governor Walker's proposed budget that is certain to provoke debate is his plan to fund a new sports arena in downtown Milwaukee.

Opponents of a proposed downtown Milwaukee streetcar project are continuing to collect signatures in an effort to get the issue before voters. Meanwhile, the Milwaukee Common Council plans to hold its final up or down vote on the project at its February 10th meeting.
