Relatives and supporters of a woman wounded during a police shooting in Wauwatosa the night of Dec. 10 are raising more concerns about the city's police force. 

Wauwatosa police say they responded to a report of a woman being attacked by another woman with a stick.

The 23-year-old female officer who went to the scene says the attacker had a wooden post and began hitting her squad car. Police say the officer was “forced to shoot the subject” when she advanced on the officer.

The city of Wauwatosa will pay officer Joseph Mensah the equivalent of 13 months pay plus an additional $15,000, along with what he is owed for vacation and sick time amongst other benefits once his resignation becomes official at the end of the month.

Wauwatosa Mayor Dennis McBride says he stands by his decisions to implement a curfew and request the National Guard in the days following the Milwaukee County district attorney's decision not to charge a Wauwatosa police officer who fatally shot a black teenager.

Officer Joseph Mensah fatally shot Alvin Cole at Mayfair Mall in February. Mensah maintains that Cole had a gun and fired at officers. 

The Wauwatosa Police and Fire Commission held a regular meeting on Wednesday night.

Some people expected the commission to take up whether to terminate the contract of Police Officer Joseph Mensah — who has shot and killed three people in the line of duty on separate occasions. A recent independent investigation by former U.S. Attorney Steven Biskupic recommended Mensah be fired.

The city of Wauwatosa was the backdrop for another protest on Thursday. A few hundred people gathered for the Rally for Justice in Hart Park. They’re continuing calls for justice in the cases of the two men and one teen killed by Officer Joseph Mensah – Antonio Gonzalez, Jay Anderson Jr., and Alvin Cole.

Wauwatosa Mayor Dennis McBride and Wauwatosa Police Chief Barry Weber addressed members of the media Monday in an effort to be “totally transparent” about what’s happened in the city over the last few days. But some protesters say they’re not telling the full story.

Protests against social injustice and violence by police have been ongoing in Wauwatosa since the summer. They've centered around suspended police Officer Joseph Mensah, who has shot and killed three people of color in the line of duty.

The cries of the community grew louder last week after Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm chose not to charge Mensah in the February fatal shooting of 17-year-old Alvin Cole.

On Thursday, people took to the streets again to protest Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisolm’s decision Wednesday not to criminally charge Wauwatosa Police Officer Joseph Mensah. 

Mensah fatally shot 17-year-old Alvin Cole after being dispatched to Mayfair Mall for a disturbance earlier this year. Cole had a gun and Mensah has said he believed Cole shot at officers. Cole was Black, as is Mensah. 

Black Lives Matter protesters were disappointed with Wednesday’s decision by Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm to not file criminal charges against Wauwatosa Police Officer Joseph Mensah. Chisholm had reviewed Mensah's fatal shooting of a Black teenager, Alvin Cole, outside Mayfair Mall in February. The protests that followed Wednesday’s announcement were mostly peaceful, with some exceptions.

A Black Wisconsin police officer who fatally shot a Black teenager outside a suburban Milwaukee mall in February won't be charged because he had reasonable belief that deadly force was necessary, a prosecutor said Wednesday.

Wauwatosa Officer Joseph Mensah shot 17-year-old Alvin Cole outside Mayfair Mall on Feb. 2 after police responded to a reported disturbance at the shopping center.

The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office could announce a decision Wednesday on whether to charge Wauwatosa Police Officer Joseph Mensah in the death of Alvin Cole.

Mensah shot Cole, who was 17-years-old, in February when responding to a disturbance at Mayfair Mall. Police say Cole ran and fired a weapon. His family disputes the claim.

Cole was Black; so is Mensah.

In a controversial move, the Police and Fire Commission in Wauwatosa voted Monday night to set a firm schedule for hearing a complaint against suspended police Officer Joseph Mensah.

A citizens panel in Wauwatosa has suspended Joseph Mensah, a police officer who has been the focus of protests for shooting three males to death while in the line of duty over the last five years. The Wauwatosa Police and Fire Commission has also appointed a former federal prosecutor to look into a complaint that aims to have Mensah fired.
